Saturday Sights ~5~

Yola, Elsewhere!

Long time no see! I know, I know. I've been a very bad Deserae. But you have to understand--- first there were finals, then there was Spring Break... and I'm working with a broken computer, so bear with me, will ya? You know I try really hard to keep the conversation rolling.

YA Scavenger HuntSo as a peace offering, I'm going to FIRST tell you about a bunch of different contests going on around the blogosphere.
-The Tri-Annual YA Scavenger Hunt organized by the amazing Colleen Houck (we'll read her Tiger's Curse series, soon, no worries) is open for another 32 hours! (Meaning it ends on April 1st at noon PST.) Trust me; even if you don't win, the hunt is still extremely fun to participate in. Visit the authors' blogs, check out exclusive content from some of your favorite ones, and get familiar with some titles you may have never heard of! It's worth it and you have three chances to win.
-Both Mundie Moms and Novel Novice are hosting giveaways for Elizabeth Eulberg's TAKE A BOW, which we'll be reading together first thing in May. So why not try to get it now?
-Reading Teen is offering up the complete Mother Earth series to one lucky reader in signed copies, and another set on an e-reader. Although I've never read the series myself, Austin, one of the reviewers there, recommended it whole-heartedly, and because I trust him, Andye, and Amy, and Kit and the whole gang there with my (bookish) life, I thought you might want to try your hand at it!
-Elsewhere offers all sorts of things you can do to win fabulous book-related wonders. Check out this month's calendar to see what you can do to win and you can enter every contest, every single week! Only one entry per person, though. But here's a hint, participating in Monday Mayhem (Week 5entries due by the 5th), and then each of the Wednesday Wanderings Challenges (Week 5 entries due by the 3rd) gives you a total of 4 entries per week! Why NOT go for it?

NOW you might want to laugh, but my sister showed me this workout video called "Walk at Home" and, although admittedly, it's pretty laughable, I found myself really enjoying the workout! The instructor--- the trainer or whatever you want to call her--- is so sweet, so encouraging and fun to watch, that you really can't help but want to walk with her. And yeah, you're walking in place, but this "easy" workout really does help you burn calories, it does help get your blood flowing, AND if you're doing it right you can even break a sweat! So, if you're like me and looking for a workout that will help you ease into the idea of actually working out, you might want to try it. I know I'm going out and getting my own copy soon. (Leslie, you rule.)

NEXT we'll go back toward the geeky and I'll tell you that today, I'm going to see "Wrath of the Titans." I've been waiting for this movie ever since I accidentally stumbled upon its existence in a cold almost empty movie theater on a dark and stormy night... And I know that most (or all!) of you have seen "The Hunger Games" and loved it, but instead of reviewing something that was an obvious crowd-pleaser, I'm going to review the first "Clash of the Titans" sequel I've ever seen! I am a huge fan of Greek mythology, "Pride and Prejudice," and hot men. So when I saw that the gods had returned with Rosamund Pike (JANE!!!!) and Sam Worthington (*dies*), I just KNEW I had to see it. How could I not? No worries--- I'll be back later with a quick review of what I thought. In the meantime, though, you can let me know all about your "Hunger Games" experiences. Did you love it, or did you love it?

And FINALLY some of my favorite YouTubers have partnered up with Teen.com to produce for your viewing pleasure, a new video every weekday. On Mondays, Meghan (aka Strawburry17) does a show called Sounds Like where she talks about new music--- you know how much I love music. On Tuesdays, Joey (JoeyGraceffa on YouTube) tells us all about his favorite things. Wednesdays, Cat (catarific! Woot!) gives people just like me and you some "non-expert advice" and on Thursdays and Fridays, the three join forces to bring you "Pop Wars" and "The Click Clique." Even if you're not really interested in the Teen.com shows they're doing, I still highly recommend checking them out. Meghan and Joey both do music videoss and Cat... she's adorable.

So that's it for this week! Sorry there's not much amazing news. The best thing, though, is that you have plenty of contests to dive into. So what are you waiting for? Get going, yo!

Lots of love,
Deserae
P.S. This week, we'll be talking about Ally Carter's OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF TIME. Hopefully you've started reading it or have it in your possession, and I really hope you'll participate in the challenges for this week. You can start sending in entries for the Wednesday Wanderings now, by the way. Let's go!

***This month, we're still featuring one book a month, but instead of putting the "challenge" books on the back-burner, we're going to celebrate them as kind of "further readings." Meaning I'll post a review about them, let you know what I know about them, and I'll take whatever reviews you write about them around the time of the listed week as entries toward the Mayhem Prize. So now you have three chances to win!--- three books to get excited about every week. And if you don't like one, there are two others to choose from. Try at least ONE. Trust me--- I don't recommend whack reads! Also, the Sisterhood Challenge is so that those of you who haven't read that series can catch up so we can read the FIFTH book (you heard me!) together in May. So get on it! Go, go, go!

Book Review: One Day

Yesterday, I described this book in one word: beautiful. And the more and more I think about it, I'm happy with my choice of word.

ONE DAY is the first adult novel I've read outside of school-required reading (lies! Besides Agatha Christie, okay? The first novel outside of Christies' murder mysteries), and I have to say that this story captivated me in a wonderful way. It provided, first and foremost, an incredible story about two people who could've lived without each other but chose not to and ended up having years and years of friendship, missed opportunities, and surprising bouts of ups and downs  all throughout. But this book also gave the most unique perspective for a story that I can think of off the top of my head--- the way we get to peek into this relationship on July 15th of every year challenged me, as the reader, to fill in the gaps, forced me to become caught up in the present, and made me want to see the future even though! in doing so, another year of their lives will have been cast away as soon as I make it to the next chapter.

It's this weird thing--- this really weird thing--- that happens to me when I read this book. For some reason, I start going crazy or something, and I feel like I'm aging with Emma and Dexter as the story progresses. And, in a way, it helps me identify with the characters more, but in another way it freaks me the heck out. I'm sitting here, reading a piece of fiction, thinking it's doing some Dorian Gray voodoo and actually being okay with that.

Because I don't know about you, but I like experiencing the books I read. I like feeling like their lives are relevant to me somehow... I like feeling like I can relate to the character's struggles and I like thinking that there is a chance I could run into them somehow--- know them somehow and I like actually feeling connected to their lives and falling into step with how the story's told. David Nicholls makes me... I don't know how to explain it really. But as I read this book I thought of my future, of how it would be for me the day after I graduated and ten, fifteen years after that. And yeah. At first it was scary to think about. But, to me, ONE DAY is about more than Dex and Em's relationship; it's about finding your place in the world, "changing the bit around you," dealing with life as it happens, and not being afraid to live while you can.

I loved Dexter and Emma so much. Emma, especially, was a phenomenal, well-crafted character. I enjoyed her wit, her taste in books and her persona. She may have had multiple internal struggles throughout the course of the story, but there was something constant about that that made her feel very real to me, very alive. And Dexter. Oh, Dex. He goes through it throughout this story and there are moments when it felt like there was growth and change... What I love about his character is that, unlike Em, he was not stable, he did not have a constant state of being. But he was always sure of himself. He never really worried about how he was going to get through to tomorrow even though he's been given the short end of the stick in this novel and exhibits the kind of reckless behavior of a person you'd think is constantly thinking about that sort of thing. The two together, though, have a different dynamic than they have apart adding this other layer of masterful storytelling on David Nicholls' part. As you read, you can see it; they really are better together. And you're waiting and wishing and hoping and praying that they will realize it, too.

The ending was perfect. Perfect for this story, I mean. And I love when an author can say something without expressly saying it. I can say without spoilers that the ending was the perfect send-off for Dex and Em. It was whole... complete. I feel like I have properly said farewell to the two and it was through the author's words. He's an amazing storyteller that David Nicholls.

I highly recommend this novel to those who love adult fiction and are looking for something good to read, and also to "new adults" who aren't too sure about adult fiction and are looking for something to introduce them to the genre. There're drugs, and there's alcohol, there's sensuality, and there's cursing and mature language. But this is nothing you haven't seen or heard of before and it's never graphic or uncalled for in the text. So please, if you're looking for a "beautiful," rewarding story to get you through the week, your vacation, and something you can treasure for the rest of your life, pick up a copy of ONE DAY. I have no doubt that you'll love it as much as I did.

Book of the Week
Blurb from Goodreads:

It’s 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another. Over twenty years, snapshots of that relationship are revealed on the same day—July 15th—of each year. Dex and Em face squabbles and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. And as the true meaning of this one crucial day is revealed, they must come to grips with the nature of love and life itself.

Description: Set against the exciting backdrop of competitive ballroom dancing, Musical Chairs is about Armando a Bronx-bred Latino who aspires to be a dancer but whose only way in is as handyman at a Manhattan dance studio, and Mia, an Upper East Side princess who is the studio's star performer. Though worlds apart, their shared passion for dance promises to bring them together until a tragic accident changes Mia's life forever, and she finds herself wheelchair-bound at a rehab facility, with her dreams of a dance career shattered. Fortunately, Armando has enough dreams for both of them and, when he hears about a wheelchair ballroom dance competition that will soon be held in NY, he sees a way to return something to Mia that she thinks is lost forever. At first she is reluctant--wheelchair dancing, though highly popular overseas, is something she never even knew existed. But, with the help of several other patients at the rehab center, Armando organizes an intense training program that will bring them all center stage and in the spotlight. The prize is irrelevant: what they really stand to win back is their zest for life.

Saturday Sights ~3~

Hello Great People of Elsewhere,

It's Saturday and as has been the tradition, I am bound to tell you all about the millions of awesome things I've seen since last week.

FIRST I am pleased to announce that Pottermore will, indeed, be open to all in April! I'm a Beta Tester and I've had a blast this past year, but I can't wait for those of you who didn't make the Beta window to  come and join me there. Let's be friends! In other Potter related news, you UK Wanderers will be pleased to know that Warner Bros. Studios is opening the Making of Harry Potter tour very, very soon! In fact, you can order tickets now, read about what they've got there to show you, AND see a few sneak peek pics of the exhibits on display! I don't know whether to be unnerved or thrilled by the fact that they're taking the magic away from the franchise, but I do know one thing: I wish I were in London so I could experience the tour, myself!

NEXT, it is my duty to alert you that voting for the Children's Choice Book Awards has officially opened up! You can vote for the book of the year, the author of the year, and the illustrator of the year should you wish to, and just in case you weren't interested before and need some persuading, in the teen category, these books are going head to head:
Clockwork_prince  Taylor_daughterofsmokeandbone_hc  Divergent  Passion  Perfect
And these authors...
Diary_of_a_wimpy_kid_-_cabin_fever  Middle_school  Dork_diaries_3  Inheritance  Son_of_neptune_final_jacket
So it is now your responsibility to help your favorite reads and authors of 2011 to win! Go forth, my loves and vote!

NOW that that's over, I can tell you about this online shop called Gone Reading that sells book related merchandise like t-shirts that sport "Jane Austen for President" and book jackets that say "Take me to your reader..." It's pretty cool but what's even COOLER is that Reading Teen, a book blog I love and adore, has been given a special coupon code that allows you to get 25% off any purchase up until April 14th 2012. SO, with your parent's permission (or your own permission if you're 18 and up!), buy something! Apparently, their "after-tax profits" go toward funding libraries and reading-focused charities. How cool is that?!

The Cavendish Home For Boys and Girls
ALSO, I feel the need to announce this because as soon as these books come out, we're going to be all over them like butter on toast, okay? So Claire Legrand whose debut novel, THE CAVENDISH HOME FOR BOYS AND GIRLS will be coming out THIS AUGUST!, has just announced that she's also sold her first YA novel, a retelling of the classic ballet, The Nutcracker, entitled WINTERSPELL. Guys. I cannot even begin to express how excited I am for it! This is what was announced about a month ago:
"Claire Legrand's YA debut WINTERSPELL, a retelling of the Nutcracker in which a seventeen-year-old girl journeys from 1899 New York City to the hidden land of Cane to rescue her father from a mad faery queen, only to find herself falling in love with a cursed prince... [sold] to Zareen Jaffery... in a two book deal...[!!!!]"
CAVENDISH is first, though, ya'll. And then THE OCTOBER YEAR. AND THEN WINTERSPELL. *excitement ensues*
And FINALLY! Here's some news for you Cassie Clare fans! Mundie Moms, another book blog that specialize in all things Cassie Clare, has just announced that Cassie has sold the rights to a trilogy called The Dark Artifices. They even posted a statement from The Washington Post that reads:

The first of “The Dark Artifices” books, currently untitled, will come out in 2015. According to a statement from the publisher, Clare, who placed her previous work in contemporary New York and Victorian England, will continue her tales of the Shadowhunters, a hybrid race “unseen but ever-present, our invisible protectors.”

“The series follows Emma Carstairs, the fiercest warrior and most skilled young Shadowhunter since Jace Wayland, and Emma’s sworn partner in arms, Julian Blackthorn,” the statement reads. “Despite Emma’s complicated feelings for Julian, the two must band together to investigate a demonic plot that stretches from the warlock-run nightclubs of the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica.”

Clare said in a statement that she was sure readers would love both her new and her established characters.

“I know readers will come to love Emma, Mark, Cristina and Julian just as they have loved Jace, Clary, Will, Tessa and Jem,” she said. “Readers have often asked what will happen in the Shadowhunter world after the events of the ‘Mortal Instruments’ and this series will give them a chance to find out.”

Yee-haw! For more information regarding it, check out the Mundie Moms article linked to above.

And that's it for this week, Lovelies. What do you think? The literary world is marvy, right?! Remember that this week on Elsewhere we're talking about ONE DAY. You know! That book that was made into a movie that stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess... No? You don't? Well my review will be posted tomorrow and in it, I will list several reasons why you might enjoy this one. Don't forget to visit the March Calendar so you can check out the prompts for this week's Wednesday Writes Challenge and in the words of John Green: Don't forget to be awesome.

The April Calendar is going up some time today! Are you excited, because I'm excited. Let's do this thing called life!

Later!

P.S. Before I forget there's this awesome YouTube channel called Feast of Fiction where Jimmy and Ashley prepare meals from their favorite books, shows, etc. And they teach you how to make it! So check it out, yo. For the children!

Friday Finale: DITCHED

This week on Elsewhere, we did our part in spreading the word about Robin Mellom's debut YA novel, DITCHED...

On Monday...
We attempted to cause some Mayhem by recommending DITCHED to someone in a convenience store, but fortunately for you, I was too chicken! So I offered an alternative challenge for you guys to recommend DITCHED to an adult figure and I hope some of you took me up on that! Remember, if you take the challenge, you're automatically entered to win The Book of the Week Prize Pack. Next time, Loves.

On Tuesday...
We went to Twitter and... well, in truth, I talked to myself. But it was cool because Robin and her agent, Jill Corcoran, stopped by. Together, we decided to use the hashtag #DITCHED in order to start and keep a conversation about the book going, so if you ever get around to reading it, tweet #DITCHED to me. I'd be more than happy to discuss the book with you!

On Wednesday...
I told the embarrassing story of my first "date." If you haven't read it yet, save yourself. I don't know why I was so honest and I have no idea why I didn't just do the creative challenge, instead. Yes, Wanderers. There were two challenges and one was to write a creative story about a girl who loses her memory, the other to write a non-fiction about a date that went horribly wrong. And I chose the latter route. I'm obviously crazy-pants.

On Thursday...
I searched my internets again in order to find reviews about DITCHED that might do a better job persuading you to read it than I did. And I found EIGHT POSITIVE REVIEWS. EIGHT!!! From all over the place, you guys! If that's not saying, "You should probably read this book, ya'll," then I don't know what is. I mean, you read my review where I expressed both my qualms and likes about the story, but despite all my nit-picky-ness, I, like these other reviewers, enjoyed the story immensely. It was a great, quick read and look! Kirkus Reviews liked it so maybe you will too. :]

And now it's Friday!
But there are still so many ways we can continue to spread the love and word about the books that we love and adore by...

1. Taking up the Mayhem Challenge anyway! Sure the contest is closed but wouldn't it be awesome to actually work up the courage to recommend this book to a random convenient store shopper?!

2. Join me tonight at 6 PM PST over at Livestream to talk about DITCHED! Even if you haven't read it, you can ask me what I liked or didn't like about it. You can also talk to me about other books like Ally Carter's CROSS MY HEART AND HOPE TO SPY... You know you want to! Next month we're starting out with OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF TIME so I hope you've got your copy already! Get your Gallagher Girl on!

3. Recommend books to your friends AND to me! Next month, I want to offer a variety of books for you guys to read so I have two additional "challenges" going on in addition to the Book of the Week. Maybe later tonight, I'll explain more about that, but I want to include a new challenge to replace Wednesday Writes. There are four weeks this month so I need four book recommendations from you guys. So let's hear them! Before I post the calendar tomorrow at 3 o'clock my time! :) This month, I'm looking for CLASSICS, GENRE BENDERS, and/ or CLASSIC RETELLINGS. Click on each for an example of a book in that particular genre if you're not sure what they are. These are examples of books I personally would like to read, so if you read them and liked them, recommend them!

So si, mon amies. The second week is coming to an end! But don't fret! Next week, we'll be talking about David Nicholl's #1 Bestselling Novel, ONE DAY, and you can find the Wednesday Writes challenges for this upcoming week here. Submissions are going to be accepted starting now all the way through Sunday. And if you're still wondering if you should read ONE DAY, the answer is you should. It's not too graphic so I'd say if you're a mature reader, it shouldn't bother you too much. My review is going up this Sunday so stay posted, okay!

See you guys later! At 6 my time, remember?

Lots of love,
Deserae
P.S. Don't forget to check out the Finale going on at Home, too!
